Windows 11 activation: where to enter the product key, digital license and cheap key risks
You do not need a license to install Windows 11, but you need a valid license to activate it. A computer sold without an operating system does not come with a Windows license, so you have to get one separately.
Checking the activation status
Start > Settings > System > Activation. The status is shown on this page.
Entering the product key
The product key is a 25-character code. For a boxed product it is on the card or on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label; if you bought it online, it is in the seller's email.
- You can enter it on the Product key screen during setup, or
- After setup: Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
If you do not have a license, you can buy one from the Microsoft Store with Open Store on the same page.
Digital license: link it to your Microsoft account
When Windows 11 is activated, your license is tied to your hardware (digital license). It is recommended to link it to your Microsoft account:
- Under Settings > Accounts > Your info, check that you are signed in as an administrator.
- On the Settings > System > Activation page, select Add an account and sign in with your Microsoft account.
Why does it matter? According to Microsoft, Windows may become deactivated after a major hardware change such as replacing the motherboard. If the license is linked to your account, you can reactivate with the Activation troubleshooter. And when you reinstall Windows later, you can install the same edition without entering a key: choose I don't have a product key in setup and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
Keys sold very cheaply
Windows keys are sold online far below Microsoft's price. Points from Microsoft's own statements to keep you away from trouble:
- Microsoft says the safest way is to buy from Microsoft or a store you trust.
- It notes that validation often fails for copies bought on auction sites or that came with a used computer. If you buy a used computer, ask the seller for the Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
- A license is generally for one computer.
- Non-genuine Windows keeps receiving critical security updates, but other updates and features are for genuine Windows only.
So where you get the key matters: a cheap key may work today and still be deactivated later. You can report a seller you suspect of selling counterfeit software or keys on Microsoft's "How to Tell" page.
Do not use activation tools ("activators", "KMS" and the like). They are not licenses; they are programs of unknown origin, and you would be installing software that can access all of Windows on your computer.
