Motherboard boot menu and BIOS key: ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE, ASRock
On a self-built desktop, the keys are set by the motherboard brand (not the brand of the case).
| Motherboard | Boot menu | BIOS |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS | F8 | Del or F2 |
| MSI | F11 | Delete |
| GIGABYTE | F12 | Delete |
| ASRock | F11 | F2 or Del |
You can find the motherboard brand printed on the board, on its box or in the logo shown at startup.
Check the BIOS for Windows 11
On desktop motherboards TPM may be turned off by default; Windows 11 setup then says "This PC can't run Windows 11". According to Microsoft, the setting may appear as Intel PTT (Platform Trust Technology), AMD fTPM, Security Device or TPM State, usually in the Advanced, Security or Trusted Computing menu. Details: Windows 11 installation problems.
According to GIGABYTE, the Del key may not work at startup while fast boot is enabled; if Windows is installed, use Advanced startup > UEFI Firmware Settings instead.
If the key does not work
- Press the key repeatedly as soon as the logo appears; if the Windows logo shows up, you were too late.
- If pressing the F key changes volume or brightness, press the same key together with Fn (Fn key and Fn Lock).
- The menu may not appear when resuming from sleep or fast startup; shut the computer down fully and start it again.
If setup cannot find the drive, shows "This PC can't run Windows 11" or the USB drive does not start: Windows 11 installation problems. All brands: boot menu and BIOS keys table.
